Container Info
Container Dimensions by Type
Storage and shipping containers are available in a range of sizes to suit different needs. The most common external lengths are 20 feet and 40 feet, with a standard width of 8 feet. Standard containers typically stand 8 feet 6 inches tall, while high cube containers provide extra vertical space, measuring 9 feet 6 inches in height. For space-constrained environments, our compact new-build containers offer a practical solution for tight areas.
Container Weight Specifications
When assessing container weight, three key terms are essential:
Tare Weight – The empty weight of the container itself.
Gross Weight – The maximum allowable weight, including both the container and its cargo.
Payload (Net Weight) – The weight of the cargo the container can safely carry.
These weights are usually displayed on the container’s exterior, particularly near the doors or before repurposing.
Internal Dimensions & Construction Details
Containers are built with corrugated steel walls, which reduce internal space slightly compared to external measurements. Here’s how dimensions adjust:
Width: The corrugation (1 inch per side) reduces the internal width by 2 inches (50 mm), resulting in an approximate 7 ft 10 in (2.39 m) clearance.
Length: The 2-inch (50 mm) thick doors and corrugated back panel shorten the internal length by about 3 inches (75 mm).
Height: The thickest reduction occurs vertically due to the floor thickness (~27 mm / 1.1 in) and under-floor clearance (~6 in / 150 mm). The steel top rail (4 in / 100 mm) further reduces door height to roughly 7 ft 6 in (2.28 m).
Note: These dimensions can vary based on construction methods, especially in cut-down or modified containers.
